About

Western Massachsuetts Jewish Genealogical Society (WMJGS) is a chapter of the International Association Of Jewish Genealogical Societies (IAJGS). The IAJGS sponsors an annual conference that brings together novices and experts in genealogical research at locations around the globe … from Washington, D.C. to Jerusalem. Several WMJGS members have attended these gatherings and are happy to share information about the benefits of participating.

Our meeting locations vary in order to reach various audiences in our region. In the past, we have had meetings at places such as Congregation B'nai Israel, Jewish Community of Amherst, JCC of Greater Springfield, National Yiddish Book Center, Forbes Library, Sons of Zion, etc.

WMJGS works closely with the Jewish Genealogy Society of Greater Boston (JGSGB), the only other chapter of the IAJGS in Massachusetts.

Our members receive copies of the JGSGB newsletter, "MassPocha." Occasionally our meetings feature presentations by JGSGB members.

The intent is to compile as complete a list as possible of specifically Jewish genealogical resources, many of which are not easily known or even completely undiscovered heretofore.

Through the generous financial support of the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, WMJGS was able to build a resource collection at the Forbes Library in Northampton; the materials are available to all in the Library’s reference section. This collection includes a large variety of helpful books as well as on-line access to the databases JewishGen, AncestryPlus, and HeritageQuest

Information about the Library’s hours can be found here.
